Reactive Technologies and Siemens are integrating real-time inertia data with advanced grid planning software to help operators unlock renewable capacity and improve grid resilience.
Reactive Technologies and Siemens have announced a strategic technology integration that could significantly change how grid operators manage stability in power systems increasingly dominated by renewables. By combining real-time inertia monitoring with advanced transmission planning software, the partnership aims to give operators clearer, faster insight into grid resilience at a moment when traditional fossil fuel-based stability is declining.
At the core of the collaboration is the integration of Reactive Technologies’ GridMetrix technology with Siemens’ Gridscale X transmission planning software, PSS®E. Grid inertia, which reflects the kinetic energy stored in generators and other rotating assets, plays a crucial role in maintaining grid frequency and preventing blackouts. However, as grids transition toward wind and solar, inertia becomes harder to predict and manage using conventional models alone.
Reactive Technologies’ GridMetrix provides direct, real-time measurement of grid inertia across live networks. When combined with Siemens’ planning and simulation capabilities, grid operators gain both an operational and predictive view of system strength. According to Siemens, this enhanced visibility allows operators to respond more quickly to disturbances and potentially unlock up to 30 percent more grid capacity through renewable generation.
The integration enables operators to simulate multiple grid scenarios with greater precision. As a result, they can better understand how existing assets perform under stress and where future investments will deliver the greatest impact. This approach supports more informed capital allocation while reducing reliance on fossil fuel generation that has traditionally been used to stabilise networks.
Marc Borrett, CEO of Reactive Technologies, said that power system simulations form a critical foundation of the company’s research and development work. He noted that combining real-world measurement data with Siemens’ simulation tools allows operators to generate actionable insights. These insights help mitigate risk, reduce renewable curtailment, and plan new low-carbon assets with greater confidence.
From Siemens’ perspective, the collaboration responds to growing demand for high-quality, accurate grid data. Magnus Torronen, Head of Siemens Grid Software Northern Europe, said the integration strengthens Reactive Technologies’ global offering at a time when utilities need better tools to plan investment and manage increasingly complex power systems.
The software component of the partnership sits within Siemens’ broader digital ecosystem. Gridscale X, part of the Siemens Xcelerator platform, is designed as modular software that supports scalable digital transformation and moves utilities closer to autonomous grid management. By embedding real-time inertia data into planning and operational workflows, the partnership aligns with industry efforts to modernise grids without compromising reliability.
As electricity systems worldwide accelerate their shift toward renewables, the ability to accurately measure and simulate grid inertia becomes essential. This collaboration between Siemens and Reactive Technologies highlights how digital tools and real-time data can work together to strengthen grid stability while supporting the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
