Deputy President (DP) Gideon Moi Kindiki has called on young people to play a proactive role in addressing global challenges. Speaking at the National Youth Conference 2025 in Nairobi, he emphasized innovation, leadership, and civic responsibility as essential tools for shaping a better future. According to DP Kindiki, young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are the change-makers of today, capable of driving social, economic, and environmental transformation locally and globally.

The Importance of Youth Engagement

DP Kindiki began by highlighting that youth make up a significant proportion of Kenya’s population, with over 60% under the age of 35. This demographic, he said, represents a vital resource for innovation and development. He urged policymakers, institutions, and community leaders to provide meaningful opportunities for young people to contribute to society.

“Engagement must go beyond token gestures,” DP Kindiki stressed. “Young people must be given platforms where ideas are implemented, voices are heard, and failures are considered stepping stones rather than setbacks.” He added that harnessing youth potential is critical for tackling pressing issues such as climate change, economic inequality, technological disruption, and social injustice.

Global Challenges Facing the Youth

DP Kindiki outlined several global challenges that require attention and innovative solutions from young people:

Climate Change

Rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation threaten millions of livelihoods worldwide. DP Kindiki urged youth to champion sustainable practices, engage in environmental advocacy, and develop innovative technologies to mitigate climate risks. He emphasized that even small local actions—like tree planting, recycling, and energy conservation—can contribute to broader global solutions.

Economic Inequality

Despite progress in several sectors, wealth disparities continue to widen. DP Kindiki noted that young people have a critical role in promoting inclusive economic growth. Through entrepreneurship, innovation, and socially responsible business initiatives, youth can help create opportunities for marginalized communities and reduce the wealth gap.

Technological Disruption

Automation, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation are reshaping industries. To remain competitive, youth must continuously acquire new skills. DP Kindiki encouraged training in coding, data analytics, and digital entrepreneurship. He explained that technology is not merely a career tool but a platform to innovate and lead change in multiple sectors.

Health Challenges

The ongoing impacts of pandemics, mental health crises, and limited access to healthcare present urgent global issues. Youth, DP Kindiki said, should lead health advocacy campaigns, enhance awareness, and support initiatives that improve healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved areas. Mental health, he stressed, is as important as physical well-being, requiring community support and accessible services.

Peace and Security

Conflicts, terrorism, and civil unrest continue to destabilize regions worldwide. Young people can contribute to social cohesion and conflict resolution by participating in dialogue, community service, and civic education. DP Kindiki emphasized that peaceful societies are built when youth engage actively in promoting tolerance, inclusivity, and justice.

Innovation and Leadership as Solutions

According to DP Kindiki, youth possess the tools to address global challenges through creativity and leadership. “Innovation goes beyond technology,” he said. “It means thinking differently, solving problems creatively, and taking initiatives that generate real impact.”

He highlighted examples of Kenyan youth-led innovations gaining international recognition, such as mobile payment platforms, agritech solutions, and renewable energy projects. DP Kindiki urged governments, institutions, and the private sector to support innovation hubs, incubators, and mentorship programs. By providing guidance and resources, young people can transform ideas into scalable solutions.

Civic Responsibility and Social Change

DP Kindiki also emphasized civic responsibility as a cornerstone of youth leadership. He encouraged young people to volunteer in their communities, engage in local governance, and advocate for policies promoting equity, justice, and sustainability.

“Change begins at the community level,” he explained. “When youth address local issues, they gain experience and skills necessary for tackling national and global challenges.” Ethical leadership, integrity, and inclusivity, he added, are critical for ensuring long-term positive impact.

Global Collaboration and Networking

The DP underscored the importance of international collaboration among youth. He encouraged participation in exchange programs, global platforms, and cross-border initiatives to share ideas, knowledge, and best practices. He noted that challenges such as climate change or technological disruption require collective action that transcends national boundaries.

Social media and digital platforms, he added, are powerful tools for collaboration and advocacy. “Technology allows you to connect, amplify your impact, and influence policy on a scale never seen before. Use it responsibly to mobilize communities and promote solutions,” DP Kindiki advised.

Government Support for Youth Empowerment

During his address, DP Kindiki highlighted government initiatives aimed at empowering youth. These include education programs, funding for startups, vocational training, and mentorship opportunities. He stressed that building an ecosystem where youth ideas can thrive requires both resources and policy support.

Additionally, he emphasized that inclusivity must guide reforms. Rural youth, women, and persons with disabilities must be prioritized to ensure that opportunities for growth and innovation reach all segments of society.

Success Stories and Role Models

DP Kindiki cited inspiring examples of Kenyan youth making significant contributions to society. From social entrepreneurs addressing food insecurity to tech innovators bridging the digital divide, these stories illustrate the power of youth-led initiatives in solving real-world problems.

He encouraged conference attendees to seek mentorship, learn from successful role models, and collaborate with peers to accelerate their impact. “You do not have to wait for opportunities to come; create them. Do not wait for change—be the change,” he urged.

Call to Action

In his concluding remarks, DP Kindiki issued a bold call to action:

“Take responsibility for your communities, your nations, and the world. The challenges we face are immense, but so is your potential to overcome them. Rise to the occasion, tackle global challenges head-on, and build a world that is just, equitable, and sustainable for all.”

He emphasized continuous learning, active participation in social and environmental causes, and innovation as keys to shaping a better future.

Conclusion

DP Kindiki’s address highlighted that youth are central to global transformation. By embracing innovation, leadership, civic responsibility, and international collaboration, young people can drive meaningful change.

He closed with a message of hope and empowerment: “The future belongs to those who are prepared, committed, and courageous. I urge you, the youth of today, to rise, lead, and create a lasting impact on your communities and the world.”
